The engines of the Morocco economy are as follows:
Oil and Gas: The economy remains heavily dependant on oil. Algeria’s economy emerged from civil war in the 1960s to begin both extensive nationalization of the economy and extensive development of the oil sector. The largest concentration of proven gas reserves is located in Hassi R'Mel, south of Algiers and northwest of Hassi Messaoud. The field is Algeria's main gas-producing field and has gas-processing facilities with a capacity of 50 billion cubic meters per year.
The In Salah gas project in the south of the country is operational, and is central to efforts to increase gas exports. The In Salah Gas consortium was the first major gas partnership between state-owned Sonatrach and a foreign operator (i.e., Statoil and BP).Most of Algeria's proven oil reserves are located in the east of the country near the Libyan border. Two basins, Hassi Messaoud and Berkine (also known as Ghadames) are located in this area, with the Berkine straddling the border with Libya. The Berkine basin and nearby Ourhoud fields have hosted a number of recent discoveries. Estimates of proven oil reserves could be revised upward in coming years because of recent oil discoveries, plans for more exploration drilling by state-owned Sonatrach and a number of foreign oil companies, and improved data on existing fields.
