"UAE was Singapore's 19th largest trading partner in 2008 and our number two largest trading partner in the Middle East and North Africa region. Our total trade with UAE stands at S$14.77 billion. SBF???s engagement efforts have so far garnered encouraging response. We have now seen Singapore businesses actively pursuing opportunities in construction and real estate, oil and gas supporting infrastructure, environmental engineering, transport and logistics, financial services and the info-communication technology sectors in the UAE. One of the largest Singapore projects in UAE can be found in the Emirate of Ajman. The Arab Heavy Industries is a public listed shipbuilding and repairs company that is jointly owned by the Ajman government and the Keppel Group," said Dato' Mohd Zain Abdullah.
Mr. Abdullah Mohammed Murad informed those present for the dialogue session, "We are looking for the latest technology and opportunities to cooperate with Singapore businessmen to develop business relations within the two countries; and we hope to be self-sufficient in 30 years' time. Ajman offers a basket of opportunities to businessmen, in sectors ranging from manufacturing, financial services to IT. We also seek to learn from Singapore businessmen who can share their expertise with us."
As Singapore's apex business chamber, SBF has been proactively assisting Singapore companies to venture overseas to seek opportunities in new and emerging markets. The emerging markets in the Middle East have been one of the key focus areas of SBF. In the first five months of 2009 alone, SBF has initiated five businesss opportunity seminars and roundtable sessions for its members and led a business mission in March to the Gulf States of Oman, Qatar and UAE.
SBF remains committed to play a pivotal role in facilitating Singapore companies' market development efforts into the United Arab Emirates.
